This project highlights a specialized lighting solution for a hazardous materials storage facility, specifically designed for the safe and effective illumination of an active storage area housing detonators.
The space measured 175 feet long by 60 feet wide with a 14-foot eave height and a 21-foot peak, covered by a double-pitch roof. The challenge was to deliver high-performance lighting that met safety codes for hazardous environments while also achieving ideal visibility and uniformity across the entire area.
Explosion Proof Hazardous Storage Lighting Design
Our professional lighting engineers and product specialists worked directly with the client to assess their site, application, and compliance needs. After gathering the necessary specifications, our team performed a custom photometric lighting design using advanced modeling software.
To meet the strict requirements of this environment, the customer selected (21) 250W C1D1 C Series Explosion Proof Lights. These fixtures are purpose-built for Class I Division 1 hazardous locations, providing safe and consistent illumination in potentially explosive environments.
Fixture Count: 21 PCS
Mounting Height: 21 feet
Area Dimensions: 175x60x14 with a double pitch roof
Fixture Certifications: Class I Division I, IP66 Rated, IP67 Rated, etc
Illumination: Average 54.5fc, Maximum 105fc
Uniformity ratio: 2.6
Results
The final lighting layout achieved outstanding performance across all key metrics:
Average Illuminance: 54.5 footcandles (fc)
Maximum Illuminance: 105 fc
Uniformity Ratio: 2.6:1
This design exceeded the standard target for warehouse active storage and retrieval areas, which typically require:
20–50fc of illumination
Uniformity ratio of 3:1 to 4:1 (lower is better)
