Explosion Proof Propane Filling Station Lighting Case Study

In this case study, we explore the installation of specialized lighting within a compressor and propane fill area. The project involved the strategic placement of six 40W Class 1 Division 1 (C1D1) LED explosion-proof Jelly Jar lights, mounted at varying heights to optimize illumination.

After a thorough evaluation, our team determined that these explosion-proof fixtures were ideally suited to meet the stringent safety requirements of both areas while providing effective illumination. The lighting setup adhered to the IES recommended illumination level for outdoor non-detailed work activities, which ranges from 5 to 20 fc, ensuring both safety and visibility in these critical operational zones.

Here’s an example of the chemical plant lighting photometric design constructed by our professional lighting engineers. In this example, The compressor area, measuring 15 x 30 feet, had lights mounted at a height of 10 feet, achieving an average illumination of 13.1 foot-candles (fc). The propane fill area, measuring 20 x 25 feet, had lights mounted at 8 feet, providing an average illumination of 13.7 fc.

Results

The installation of the 40W C1D1 LED explosion-proof Jelly Jar lights in the compressor and propane fill area achieved outstanding results. The lighting provided an average illumination of 13.1 foot-candles (fc) in the compressor area, with lights mounted at a height of 10 feet, and 13.7 fc in the propane fill area, with lights mounted at a height of 8 feet. These levels are well within the IES recommended illumination standards for outdoor non-detailed work activities, ensuring superior visibility and safety.
