Division 1 vs. Division 2 Lighting

A Division 1 location is when flammable gas/vapors can exit a process and may be present in the surrounding atmosphere during normal operation.

A Division 2 location is when flammable gas/vapors are confined within containers or closed systems during normal operation and may be leaked to the surrounding atmosphere during abnormal operation. Refer to NAFA 70 Article 500.5 (B) (1) and (B) (2).

Class 1 Div 2 Light Fixtures

Our Class 1, Division 2 lighting fixtures are explosion proof and are certified to North American standards: UL 844, UL 1598, UL 1598A. They are also certified to international standards, ATEX, IECEx, and IP66.

Round High Bays - Can be mounted on the ceiling/wall/stanchion while projecting a focused round beam.

Square High Bays - Can be mounted on the ceiling/wall/stanchion while projecting larger area square beam.

Linear Lighting - Can be mounted on the ceiling/wall/stanchion while projecting a long rectangular beam.

Linear Vapor Proof - Designed to operate reliability in continuously wet environments, can be mounted on ceiling/wall/stanchion while projecting a long rectangular beam.

Class, Division and Group Information

The National Electric Code (NEC)/National Fire Protection Association 70 (NFPA) Article 500 defines three Hazardous (Classified) Locations which indicates the nature and degree of a hazard existing in a particular location. Per Article 500.5 section (B):

  • Class 1 Location is one in which:
    • “Flammable gasses, flammable liquid-produced vapors or combustible liquid-produced vapors are or may be present in the air in quantities sufficient to produce explosive or ignitable mixtures”.

The two Division designations defines the probability a hazardous material is present in an ignitable concentration. Per Article 500.5 section (B) (2):

  • Division 2 location is one in which:
    1. “Volatile flammable gases, flammable liquid-produced vapors, or combustible liquid-produced vapors are handled, processed, or used, but in which the liquids, vapors, or gases will normally be confined within closed containers or closed systems from which they can escape only in case of accidental rupture or breakdown of such containers or system or in case of abnormal operation of equipment” or
    2. “Where combustible dust accumulations are present but are normally insufficient to interfere with the normal operation of electrical equipment or other apparatus, but could as a result of infrequent malfunctioning of handling or processing equipment become suspended in the air,” or
    3. “Combustible dust accumulations on, in, or in the vicinity of the electrical equipment could be sufficient to interfere with the safe dissipation of heat from electrical equipment or could be ignitable by abnormal operation of failure of electrical equipment”.

Environments for the three classes with two divisions of explosion proof lighting. The chart lists applications such as oil rigs in class 1, coal mines in class 2, and paper mills in class 3

The four Class I Group Designations represents a specific subclassification of the nature of the hazard categorized by a common character; the four groups defined in NFPA 500.6 are listed in the below table:

Group Designation Hazard Description (Type)
Group A Acetylene
Group B Flammable gas, liquid-produced vapor, combustible liquid-produced vapor mixed with air that may burn or explode, having either a maximum experimental safe gap (MESG) value less than or equal to 0.45 mm or minimum igniting current (MIC) ratio less than or equal to 0.40. Typical material is hydrogen.
Group C Flammable gas, liquid-produced vapor, combustible liquid-produced vapor mixed with air that may burn or explode, having either a maximum experimental safe gap (MESG) value greater than 0.45 mm and less than or equal to 0.75 mm, or minimum igniting current (MIC) ratio greater than 0.40 and less than or equal to 0.80. Typical material is Ethylene.
Group D Flammable gas, liquid-produced vapor, combustible liquid-produced vapor mixed with air that may burn or explode, having either a maximum experimental safe gap (MESG) value greater than 0.75 mm, or minimum igniting current (MIC) ratio greater than 0.80. Typical material is Propane.

Certification Information

Underwriters' Laboratories (UL): provides testing, inspection, and certification services.

UL Standard 844: Luminaires for Use in Hazardous (Classified) Locations
Requirements for fixed and portable luminaires for installation and use in hazardous (classified) locations.

UL Standard 1598: Luminaires
Applies to luminaires for use in non-hazardous locations that are intended for installation on branch circuits of 600 V nominal or less.

UL Standard 1598A: Supplemental Requirements for Luminaires for Installation on Marine Vessels

Supplement to 1598, applies to luminaires for installation on marine vessels utilizing grounded systems in accordance with the United States Coast Guard Electrical Engineering Regulations.

ATEX (French Acronym, French ATmosphère EXplosibles) - European Union (only) directives describing minimum safety requirements for workplaces/equipment in explosive atmospheres applications. ATEX is driven by EU law.

IECEx (International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) for use in explosive atmospheres (Ex)) IECEx is a voluntary certification.

IP66 Ingress Protection (IP) Classification - defines the degree of protection against particles and the extent of protection against water for enclosures. Based on the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standardized International Protection Code. IEC 60529.

  • Corresponds to NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association) equivalent rating Type 7.
