What is Pickleball Court Lighting?

Pickleball court lighting refers to the specific type of lighting used in both indoor and outdoor pickleball courts to ensure optimal visibility, safety, and enjoyment for players. Appropriate illumination is essential for players to be able to clearly see the ball, the boundaries of the court, and each other, whether they're playing recreationally or competitively.

What Kind of Lights Are Used for Pickleball Courts?

For indoor pickleball courts, you can use either UFO high bay lights or linear high bay lights. These lights are often used in conjunction with a wire-guard accessory to protect the light from the pickleball.

For outdoor pickleball courts, you’ll want to use LED sports lights or LED flood lights with sufficient power to illuminate the area.

Professional Pickleball Court Lighting Design

Here’s an example of a 3D pickleball court lighting photometric design constructed by our professional lighting engineers. This example uses eight 300W Area Lights with 14 ft high poles, four courts, 25 foot candles average illumination These lights are 30 feet apart and positioned 26 feet from either end of the building and mounted 10 feet high.

In this second example, 54 320W LED Linear High Bays were used to illuminate 12 courts on a 250 ft x 150 foot building with 36 foot high ceilings and 20 foot walls.

Pickleball Court Lighting Requirements

The Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) provides general recommendations for sports lighting in its publication "IES RP-6-15: Sports and Recreational Area Lighting.”

For similar sports like tennis, the IES guidelines recommend lighting levels ranging from 300 lux (30 foot-candles) for recreational play, up to 750 lux (70 foot-candles) for professional competitions. Since pickleball is played on a smaller court with similar speed and precision requirements, similar light levels may be appropriate, although this can depend on various factors such as the age of players and the color of the ball and court surfaces.

Indoor Pickleball Court Lighting

When it comes to indoor pickleball court lighting, the aim is to provide uniform, bright lighting that reduces shadows and prevents glare. Both the court itself and the surrounding areas need to be well lit. LED lights are commonly used due to their energy efficiency, long lifespan, high quality of light, and low heat output.

The court's surface should be brightly lit to make the ball and boundary lines easy to see. It's also important to consider the light's color rendering index (CRI), which measures the quality of light in terms of how accurately it reproduces colors. A high CRI is beneficial in a pickleball court as it enhances the visibility of the brightly colored balls typically used in the sport.

We offer indoor pickleball court lights that are protected against dust and use a specialized lens to disperse the light in a way that’s bright without interfering with shooter visibility. These lighting fixtures are also referred to as LED UFO High Bays and Linear High Bay Fixtures.

Outdoor Pickleball Court Lighting

Outdoor pickleball courts need careful lighting considerations. Lights should be set up to minimize shadows and glare, which can affect visibility. High-intensity floodlights are often used to illuminate the courts for evening or night play.

The specific lighting needs of a pickleball court can depend on various factors, including the size of the court, whether the court is used for recreational or competitive play, and any local regulations or standards. Therefore, consulting with a professional lighting designer or an experienced court operator is recommended when setting up lighting for a pickleball court.

We offer outdoor pickleball court lights that are IP66 Rated to withstand any harsh weather condition. These lighting fixtures are also referred to as LED Sports Flood Lights.
